What to do in Montreal with Kids

Sightseeing

Sightseeing is always a great way to start off your trip. View all the places you want to see first, Get to see the different areas and neighborhoods. Then you can decided what you enjoyed best and what you want to spend more time doing. That is usually our recommendation to any trip. Luckily, we compiled a list of the Best Montreal Tourist Attractions. After plenty of visits, we narrowed down the must see in this amazing city!

Visit Pointe-à-Callière Montréal Archaeology and History Complex

This is a great place to start off your trip in Montreal where it all began. Learn some of the history and see the development of Montreal through the centuries. Start you visit off with the multimedia show which is included in your tickets price. Kids will love visiting the pirate-ship area, uncovering lost items, and the connecting underground tunnel which use to be a sewer. There are both temporary and permanent exhibits here that you will enjoy during your visit. We recommend following the first time visitors path on your tour here. This will let you see everything in the most efficient way.

Visit The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

One of our favorite museums to visit in Montreal. If you are thinking a fine arts museum is no place for visiting with kids, you are very much mistaken. In fact, we haven’t been to an arts museum we haven’t liked. With so many beautiful pieces to see, you would need to get here early or spend the day here. The museum has four buildings filled with pieces to see. Some of the rooms are interactive and include images and sounds as pictured above. Currently, the museum has a holographic performance in the Montreal Couture exhibit. Located next to the glass Glass Court which has one of the best views of downtown Montreal.

Try The Old Montreal Food Tour

The Old Montreal is a great way to experience some of the most popular dishes in and around Montreal. The kids will enjoy some carrot cake, bagels, and poutine, and more! Read our article on the Old Montreal food Tour here. Adult tickets come with an option for alcohol. Take a tour of Old Montreal and stop in at five different locations to grab a bite to eat. One of our favorite ways of seeing Old Montreal.

Take the Old Montreal Ghost Walk

A heads up to parents this tour is recommend for ages 12 and up from the company itself. If you are worried about being jumped out and scared, there is no need to. This tour does take you on the darker side of Montreal. It holds its own spot as a dark tourist destination in Montreal. The tour guides or “souls” that guide you through Old Montreal is what brings your experience to life. If you are debating whether to skip this or not to. how scary or gruesome it is, we will share some of the things you may encounter. You will hear some gruesome details of someone taking out their own wrist bones to slit their necks. You will walk by locations that are known to be “different” than other locations. It is a different perspective of Montreal and an experience to have.

Visit Jardin Botanique

Jardin Botanique is a must visit during your time In Montreal. It is part of the Espace Pour Lavie and you can get a combination tickets to the other attractions such as the Planetarium, Biodome, and Insectarium. This is your best bet on optimum savings as you do want to see the other attractions. Please check with the websites directly for openings. The Jardin Botanique is an escape away from the city that you never knew you needed. Take a walk through the Chinese garden and be transported far away. Explore natural shelter and the rose garden for those breathtaking photos. You can easily spend a whole day here and you can if you really want to. If you are pressed for time, spend half your day here and move onto our next stop.

Visit the Planetarium

The Montreal Planetarium is a must do on your next visit to Montreal. We recommend splitting the day up half and half with Jardin Botanique. Park in the parking lot of Jardin Botanique for the most convenience. Once you are done visiting, cross the street and take the foot path to the Planetarium. For the best viewing options, get yourself a combo of two movie tickets. Hold onto your tickets as you will need them to enter the theaters. Even after viewing both of your shows, hold onto them and we will tell you why later on. While waiting for your show to start, spend time exploring the exhibits of the planetarium. No worries as shows are very frequent. Not sure what to watch? Make sure to catch Continuum for an amazing experience! Even after watching both shows you still have access to view more with your tickets! Your tickets reserve your spot for the specific show listed. After attending both of your reserved shows you can still view other shows at no extra cost! Just line up in the waiting line next to the entrance. As long as there are available seats for viewing, you can watch the next show!

Visit a Festival

In Montreal, there is always something to do, honestly. If you are not off sightseeing, visiting museums, taking a tour, shopping, and eating you can attend a festival. One of the best resources for festivals in Montreal is the tourism website. Whenever you are visiting, there is something to do and something for everyone. You can view a comedy festival, game festival, and “tour” different regions of the world by attending these festivals. If you are looking for some really great family fun, don’t miss the festivals.

Visit Beaver Lake In Mount Royal Park

The artificial lake was built in 1993, and is shaped like a four leaf clover. On the lake, you are able to rent a rowboat and enjoy viewing the fish in the lake. During the winter months, it turns into an ice skating area; Weather permitting. Bedsides the fact that it is beautiful park to visit, it is also highly accessible. There is a paid parking lot located next to the Beaver Lake Pavilion which you can easily make your way into the park from. In the Pavilion itself, you have access to sport services, restrooms, and eating areas. If you walk up and take the paths on your right, you will find picnic areas and a playground.

You can also find The Waterfalls at Beaver Lake. The falls are located right next to the Beaver Lake. This is one of those finds that you just happen upon by visiting the area. During hot Summer days, it can get crowded as everyone is sitting by the falls to cool off. You can also find picnic tables nearby and plenty of shady areas to sit.
